About This Spot
Stepping into Penang Malaysian Cuisine in Philadelphia’s Chinatown feels like a quiet invitation to slow down and savor the layers of a vibrant culture. The modest, warmly lit interior hums with a gentle energy—busyness tempered by the steady rhythm of attentive service and the soft murmur of conversations. It’s the kind of neighborhood spot where the pace lets you settle in, sharing stories over dishes that speak directly to memories and moments forged in Malaysian kitchens far from the city streets.
Here, the atmosphere strikes a balance between casual comfort and thoughtful care. The team moves with kindness, making room for groups large and small without making you feel rushed. Regulars and newcomers alike find it easy to feel at home, and the subtle spice-sweet-sour bouquet of aromas carries you through a menu that invites discovery rather than overwhelm.
The experience centers around the rich, soulful food — flaky roti melting into its curry sauce, noodles tossed in bold sauces with fresh shrimp or tender chicken, and fragrant rice dishes that whisper stories of home. Each bite reveals a respect for tradition, where familiar Malaysian flavors are gently adapted for diners curious to embrace something new yet authentic. It’s clear this is a place where food nourishes both appetite and connection.
Practical details settle comfortably into the background: the location is tucked within one of Philadelphia’s busiest neighborhoods, so parking takes a mindful approach, but the payoff for patience is a meal that feels like a small retreat. At Penang Malaysian Cuisine, every visit offers a chance to uncover a quieter side of Chinatown—one where warmth comes not just from the kitchen’s fire but also from the smiles and the shared enjoyment of food thoughtfully prepared.

Went here with friends after being recommended this place and absolutely loved it. The prices were reasonable and they had a wide variety of Malaysian cuisine selection. As a Malaysian American myself, I thought the food was very authentic and flavorful and the staff was very nice to a large party. Definitely check this place out in Chinatown in Philadelphia!
Amazing Dining experience! My server Jon was extremely patient, kind and very quick to bring out our beverages and food. The entire team was welcoming but especially Jon! Love this place!
I really liked the place and service was good. We were a group of 5 and all of us loved it. The shrimp pad Thai was great and the chicken skewers as well.
The roti was so good!! So thin so crispy and the curry to go with perfect. The nasi lemak was also excellent, coconut rice fragrant but not overpowering - first time having Malaysian and i can't believe I've been sleeping on these!!
Penang is one of my favorite restaurants to eat in China town in Philly. This place gets busy during peak times and typically a wait time. This is in city so parking is going to be challenging but there are lot of paid parking lots closer by. The interior is good and maintained well. I ordered Roti canai with Chicken sauce and also vegetable sauce. The Roti very thin flaky bread and that goes with that Coconut curry style chicken sauce. I can easily go for more than 3 Roti canai's on a good day .lol... Then ordered Roti Telur which is the stuffed with onions and egg between the Rotis and good for sharing I wouldnt recommend it for individual meal. This also comes with chicken or veggie sauce. We ordered their classic Curry chicken with bone and this time it was too much turmeric but typically this is a great food to enjoy. Singapore street noodles was good with good combination of veggies and perfect texture. Overall had again a fantastic experience at Penang.
I’ve been here a few times, and whenever I’m craving Malaysian food, this is my go to spot in the city. I always order the roti canai, it’s a must. The satay is pretty good too, though I usually only get it when I’m with friends since the mixed satay platter is perfect for a group of three. The curry dish was flavorful but could use a bit more spice in my opinion. The menu is available via the QR code on the table, they accept cards but you can get a small discount if you pay in cash.
Loved the food here so much that we came back for dinner again next night. Vegetarian friendly place.
